Our Sustainability Strategy

Our sustainability strategy was defined in 2007 when we undertook a thorough review of our approach to sustainability. The key challenge was to define a strategy that meets the needs of our business, whilst satisfying the expectations of our stakeholders. This means balancing the sometimes competing demands of being a FTSE 250 company and one of the UK's leading housebuilders. This challenge is particularly important as we build homes that have a legacy for decades to come. It is important that we have a strategy that applies equally in the short term, for example how we look after our employees on a daily basis and in the long term, for example building energy efficient homes for our customers.

Our sustainability strategy defines six responsibilities. These responsibilities form the basis of our Sustainability Policy, approved by the Board, which explains in more detail what these responsibilities mean to us. It provides a constant set of guiding principles on the way we do business and helps us to explain to our stakeholders how we address our sustainability issues.

We realise that our strategy can not satisfy all our stakeholders all of the time, but we believe that by defining clear responsibilities, based on a review of our material impacts and core operations, we can demonstrate that we take account of sustainability throughout our business in a way that is transparent and robust.

Our Sustainability Policy is supported by a suite of supplementary policies that define our approach to specific issues, for example, environmental management and health and safety.

All policies are reviewed periodically by our Corporate Responsibility Committee, to ensure their continued relevance and appropriateness to the business.
